Tootsie Roll is a chocolate taffy that has been manufactured in the United States since 1907. The candy has qualities similar to both caramels and taffy without being exactly either confection. The manufacturer, Tootsie Roll Industries, is based in Chicago, Illinois. It was the first penny candy to be individually wrapped in America, It was back in 1896, Austrian immigrant Leo Hirschfeld started a candy business in New York City. He hoped to create a chewy candy that would not melt easily in the heat and could provide a deliciously economical alternative to traditional chocolate, which was priced very high at the time. Thus, Tootsie Rolls were born! The original (and still current) recipe for Tootsie Rolls calls for the inclusion of the previous day's batch in each new mixture every day. Because of this, there is (theoretically), a bit of Leo's very first Tootsie Roll in every one of the SIXTY FOUR MILLION!!! Tootsie Rolls that Tootsie produces each day!
